How to Choose the Right Lumber for Your Project

Whether you’re new to woodworking or you have years of experience, you’ll need to start with the right lumber. Choose from several different types of lumber to find the right one for your project. We’ve compiled a few tips to help you make the right decision:

• Consider Your Needs: What do you need for your project? Do you need many long pieces of wood or one large board that can be cut into smaller pieces? Do you need high-quality, aesthetically pleasing lumber? The more details you know up front, the easier it will be to choose the right lumber.
• Know Your Lumber Types: There are various types of lumber out there; softwoods, usually pine, are used for home construction and framing projects while hardwoods are generally used for classic woodworking or furniture projects. Hardwoods come in hundreds of colors, grain patterns, and durability levels. Our team can work with you to find what you need.
• Aesthetic Needs: The nature of your project will matter when you consider aesthetics; you’ll worry more about aesthetics for a wood dining table or window trim, for example, than a workbench or shelving. If you are considering aesthetics, examine as many boards as possible and choose pieces that will look good. If you find any boards with interesting markings, take that into account.
• Finishing: If your project requires finishing the lumber, you’ll need to take that into account when making your decision. Some types of board will hold paint and stain better than others. If you want a certain graining on your project, you’ll need to consider that in advance.
